Swollen sinuses, nose running like a tap, eyes so itchy that you’d rather go blind than deal with it another second – these are just the beginning of the struggles felt by hay fever sufferers.
When nature does its magnificent work in springing plants, grasses, and other incredible beauties to life, it brings with it a major hay fever trigger – pollen.
As we inhale and wade our way through this virtually invisible substance, certain people’s bodies have an allergic reaction where the body essentially overreacts to the pollen, treating it as an invader it needs to fight off. This immune system reaction can come in the form of constant sneezing, swelling of the throat and sinuses, headaches, itchiness, and all the other unpleasantries.
While pharmaceutical antihistamines are a great option for the relief of symptoms, there are some beneficial natural remedies that can act as a preventative and reliever for hay fever.
Eat local honey
There is a growing list of evidence for eating local honey and the prevention of severe hay fever outbreaks. Research suggests that the honey made by local bees will help to introduce small amounts of local pollen to your system and help you build a tolerance to it before it has a chance to strike and become a full blown hay fever attack.
Not to mention, it’s delicious!
Garlic and ginger
This dynamite duo makes the list for most things immune system related. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which can be heaven on a swollen sinus system and glands. Garlic is also a natural anti-inflammatory with antibiotic properties, incredible for your immune system, and a great decongestant, making it a natural fighter of hay fever.
Get a good dose of probiotics
A great probiotic supplement is high on the recommendation list for preventative action for health issues in general – hay fever especially!
By maintaining a healthy gut flora and immune system, you can help lessen your body’s immune response to pollen during hay fever seasons and prevent an onslaught of those nasty symptoms.
You might choose a reputable probiotic supplement, or to eat foods naturally high in probiotic properties such as yoghurt, sauerkraut, and kombucha.
Get into herbal teas
If you’re not already a drinker of herbal tea, now might be the time to start! Certain herbal teas such as chamomile tea, ginger tea, peppermint tea, and others contain natural antihistamines to help battle your hay fever. As an added bonus, when you’re done with your chamomile tea bag, squeeze it out, refrigerate it for 30-60 minutes and place it against your swollen eyes to help reduce the inflammation!
Nasal Plugs
Nasal plugs are becoming an increasingly popular way to deal with hay fever, with very good results.
The plugs come with sticky filters which catch pollen grains before they can enter the nasal cavity and trigger the allergic reaction that leads to the bunged-up nose and bleary eyes typical of hay fever.
They are designed not to get clogged up, so breathing is not impeded.
